Get Out Of Your Own Way

Welcome To The Community

Together, we’ll dive deep and find the strength to never give up because Great Things Take Time.

Are Summer Mondays a thing? Can we make them a thing? If you can’t ease into the week via a Summer Monday, I hope this newsletter can bring you some Monday morning joy.

I think Hyrox shook something loose in me this weekend. Today I’ve got a fun little quiz for you. Get out of your own way and keep reading for more.

If you were forwarded this email, you can subscribe and join the Great Things Take Time Community to get content from me every Monday.

Hey! What’d you score on the quiz today?!

Here's what's in today's email

Get Out Of Your Own Way

Right now, the biggest thing that is standing between you and your Great Things is probably you.

I’m fortunate that in my line of work, I get to interact with many people in all walks of life. I have a front row seat to see so many people on their journeys.

We’ve been building on the Obstacles To Your Great Things over the last couple of months, and today I want to take a recap lap over some of the things we’ve covered. (You know I love my laps.)

I shared this week on Instagram about how I didn’t think the fitness world was for me. This is 100% true. At the time I made the discovery of the fitness world, I was pretty lost with who I wanted to be and where I wanted to go. I was leaning towards pediatric nursing when a friend of mine invited me to watch one of her personal training sessions. Her theory was that I would be a great coach and that she could pass her client list to me when she left NYC.

Always a hard headed bull, I thought she was off her rocker and completely wrong. She clearly didn’t know me because I saw coaching as either hard-ass, mean insults, or a peppy, bubbly “you can do it!” attitude, which neither of those things was what I was.

What I witnessed that day changed my opinion, the trajectory of my life, and showed me I had to stop mucking around in the Great Ambiguity if I wanted more from my life.

This was the perfect example of someone who is reliant on other’s opinions and afraid to get specific. My general statement of “I want to help people” left me floating around aimlessly, unsure of what direction to go.

Before I joined Peloton, I got caught again with obstacles, I was afraid to make a priority shift, sacrificing time and energy from things that were depleting, not feeding into my goal. Once I realized that it was me standing in my own way, thinking that I didn’t deserve more, I was able to course correct and got a second chance.

Being in the role that I’m in, coupled with my personal experiences, has shown me that you’re never too old to achieve your Great Things, and the biggest obstacle standing in your way is YOU.

People will often ask me how they can get unstuck, and well, that can be hard to do if you aren’t being honest with yourself. To give you an idea of whether or not you might be in your own way, I’ve made a quiz for you below.

Each question is a yes or no question based on how you live your life. My recommendation is to write down your scoring on a piece of paper (you can’t fudge the numbers as easily). If you answer “Yes” then add or subtract 1 point. If you answer “no” then award yourself 0 points for that question.

For example, if the question said “I love reading Adrian’s newsletter +1” and you do (which I hope most of you do), then you would add 1 point to your score.

Wait until the end to add your score (no sneak peeks!)

Obstacles To Your Great Things Quiz

  • Do you rely on other people’s opinions to make decisions? (-1)

  • Do you make rash decisions because you’re exhausted and looking for relief from your stress? (-1)

  • Do you get heated by little things like small comments or others actions towards you? These are signs that you’re listening to others. (-1)

  • Are the people around you in sync with you because they see that you are working towards something you’ve always wanted that makes you so happy?  (+1)

  • At times, do you find yourself with a happy sense of stress? Like the good kind where you have a lot of things going for you that you’re excited about and looking forward to tackling?  (+1)

  • Are you not afraid of failing because you know that you’re prepared and if things don’t work out for you now that you have other levers you can pull, other plans of attack?  (+1)

  • Does failing at taking a step forward feel like the worst thing in the world? (-1)

  • If someone asked you what your goal is, your mission in life, or the things you wish to achieve, do you have a specific answer?  (+1)

  • Or is your answer generic and could be interpreted in many different ways? (-1)

  • Do you find excuses (that may seem very legit) on why you can’t achieve your goals? (-1)

  • Do you have set dates to accomplish something or to try out a plan of attack or course of action?  (+1)

  • Are you rejecting timelines and deadlines and instead just waiting for it to happen, spinning in place? (-1)

  • Do you know when you’ve gone too far and exhausted yourself? (+1)

  • Are you doing things for yourself?  (+1)

  • Or for someone else? (-1)

  • Have you made sacrifices or priority shifts to achieve your Great Things? (+1)

  • Do you feel like you don’t have enough time to get the necessary things done (-1)

  • Have you shared with those impacted by your priority shifts your timeline and plan? (+1)

  • Are you keeping your goals to yourself? (-1)

  • Have you given up because you failed once (-1)

  • Have you made multiple attempts at your goals? (+1)

  • Do you feel tired all the time? (-1)

  • Are you energized? (+1)

Now add up your score and see where you fall:

+10 to +13 points

🚀 You’re in alignment. You’re thriving, growing, and letting momentum guide you forward. Keep trusting yourself.

+6 to +9 points

🌱 You’re on the right track. You’re making progress, even if a few old habits pop up. Stay consistent.

+1 to +5 points

⚖️ You’re aware, but inconsistent. Something is holding you back, get honest with yourself and act on it. Small changes will create big shifts.

0 or below points

🪨 You’re in your own way. You may feel stuck or drained, spinning your wheels and going nowhere. The first step is radical honesty. What can you shift—internally or externally—to move forward? What do you need to sacrifice?

Where did you land? Are you surprised? Are you being honest with yourself? Your small changes can start today, it doesn’t have to be anything big, it doesn’t have to be at the start of a new day.

There is no reason you can’t achieve the things that you want from life. Maybe it’s not yet, but it will definitely be soon. The quick is fleeting, but Great Things Take Time.

Moments with Maurice

If you only pause to reflect on your life for one moment today, do it now.

Bet On Yourself

Maybe you know what you want to achieve from life and what your guiding light is (and you aced the quiz above) and maybe you don’t. We all have a reason for what we do what we do. Don’t feel bad if you don’t think that your “reason” is as good as others. Wanting freedom to travel, to spend how you want, or to be so secure that you don’t have to live by calendar obligations are all perfectly good reasons to do what you want to do.

What are you working towards? Even if you can’t dedicate your full life to whatever that is, if you know what it is, you can make small choices throughout your day that slowly compound overtime so that you’re ready to achieve your Great Things when the opportunity is presented. It doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a slow burn. Bet on yourself that you’re going to achieve your Great Things some day. Start living your life like it’s for sure going to happen.

Reflection: What is your guiding light? What do you hope to achieve above all else?

Prompt: What are the small actions you can take during the week to feed your why and keep you passively preparing for your Great Things?

What’s Got Me Smilin’

Because no matter what, there is always something to smile about.

Hyrox!

Hyrox doubles this weekend with Andy as my partner. With the Miami 10K and now this, I’ve been loving being surrounded by people working hard to achieve their goals. It’s been awhile since I jumped into the fitness competition world, but there is always so much to learn. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten smarter with how I compete, that in itself is an accomplishment. You’re never too old to accomplish something like this, you just have to be smart with how you do things.

What am I thinking right now? Wrong answers only…

Can’t even begin to express how lucky I felt to have such a great crew out there.
